TEST

Updates

I cannot believe that it’s October already! Where has 2008 gone? At this rate, I need to start Christmas shopping for NEXt year, because holidays seem to be coming more quickly than they used to! Kevin and Cady don’t seem to mind, though!

Kevin started third grade this year, and we all really love his teacher. He went on his first official Cub Scout camp out last weekend, and had a fantastic time! Kirby was another story, but Kevin was in his element. I also signed both kids up for trampoline/tumbling classes, but Kevin is the only one who has continued with it. I am amazed at all he can do! He can flip and do some cool trampoline tricks. He’s working on a back flip, but that is pretty scary stuff for an 8 1/2 year old who isn’t very fond of pain!

Cady has the same teacher Kevin had for first grade. We were very excited about that! So far, she is doing really well, although spelling tests are not her favorite thing! She still loves to read and draw, and gets better at it every day. She took art lessons last year, and would like to continue- we just need to find a place closer to home for her to attend. She loves to make friends wherever she goes, and is in heaven with all of the glittery girly stuff like make-up and pedicures! Cady also got glasses last month! A picture of her wearing them is on the “family pictures” link.

Discovery Lane is almost full this year!! We are having a lot of fun with it, and we have some wonderful families who attend. It has definitely been worth all of the blood, sweat, and tears that we went through to get it started. Kirby and the kids and I are actually getting to go on our first vacation in four years! We are going to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for a few days. We will try Dollywood and figure out what else we want to do when we get there. We are all very excited about the prospect of an actual vacation! That’s all of our news for now!

Nashville Dave

Our pre-school was doing a unit on baby animals in May. As a community service project, we asked the children to bring in supplies that could be used at our local animal shelter. Our parents are incredibly generous, so I had quite a haul to take to animal control. The director was overjoyed when I brought in all the “stuff” and asked me if I wanted to look around. Big mistake! Not only did I bring them supplies, I also bought one of their puppies to bring home to the Lane house. I could not resist the sweet little face and cuddling. The kids were overjoyed (Kirby was not), and he has been named Nashville (Nash) Dave. The Dave part is Cady’s addition! He was supposedly a border collie mix, but there is no way that’s true. He is already huge! We think he is some sort of mountain dog/lab mix. Dixie and Sonny both love him and they have a great time playing. He’s a little nutty, so he fits right in around here! His pic is on the “family pictures” page.

Kevin’s Birthday

Wow- I have been very negligent in my posting! Kevin’s birthday was April 1st, and I am just now getting this on here. Sorry! Anyway, we had a great day. Kevin invited 4 of his friends and we went bowling and to the arcade. Afterwards, we were able to take the cake to the park, as it was the first gorgeous day of spring-like weather we had. Kevin had a great eighth birthday! He has also just finished up baseball season and really wants to play again this fall. We will have to see, as I have heard that third grade is when homework loads increase significantly around here! We have some great birthday pics, but they are on Kirby’s phone, and he has not e-mailed them to me yet. I will get them up as soon as I can!

Ready for Summer

What a whirlwind of a year! The school is chugging along great, and we are signing kids up left and right for the fall- so all is well there! Kevin has had a great second half of second grade. He is also playing machine pitch baseball this year, and continues with cub scouts. Cady is going to be in first grade (I can’t believe it), and still loves art and Daisy Scouts.

We got another dog about a month ago! His name is “Nashville Dave” (chosen by Kevin and Cady respectively) and he is a 3 1/2 month old mutt. He look like a Bernese Mountain dog, but they said he was a border collie mix at the pound. Nash is very sweet and Dixie and Sonny both have a great time playing with him.

We are all ready for Summer to get here! I am staying home and letting our wonderful office manager and a fantastic teacher run the show at DLDS. It will be nice to have a long break and actually get some things done here at home. Hopefully, there will be a trip to the beach and maybe some day trips in our future as well. Maybe I can get some current pictures posted soon!

Pinewood Derby

The Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was yesterday, and Kevin came in sixth out of the entire pack! This means that he gets to go to the county-wide race on April 26th. He was very proud and excited, and we are all looking forward to attending the “big race”! Cady’s car came in second in a couple of the open races, but was ultimately defeated in the double elimination rounds. Needless to say, she was not a happy camper! She got a ribbon, though, so it all worked out in the end! Kevin is also going on his first camp-out in a couple of weeks, and he turns EIGHT tomorrow!! We can’t believe it- he’s growing up so fast!

Life at the Lanes

I have not written a post in a very long time! Our laptop crashed over the summer, and it took our logins for Wordpress with it! We are finally back, though, and hopefully I can catch everyone up on all of our news. Discovery Lane is doing very well- we started with about 50 students and are now at almost 80! We are having a great time with it- even though it’s the hardest thing we have ever done!

The kids are doing great! Kevin is enjoying baseball, and he earned his wolf badge in Cub Scouts this year. Kevin wants to try football in the fall, too. He and Cady have both built Pinewood Derby cars for the race at the end of March. He will be eight in a couple of weeks, and we will be celebrating with a bowling party.

Cady’s artwork was chosen to be in the County art exhibition at the Frist Center in February. She was one of two kindergartners in the whole school whose painting was on display. We all got dressed up and went to see her first “art show”! She was very proud- and so were we! She is taking art classes and doing Daisy scouts, too! Cady turned six in february, and we went to Build-a-Bear with a couple of friends to celebrate!

Kirby and I will have our twelfth anniversary in June! Time has really flown- it seems like the kids should only be about 3 and 5, not 6 and 8! We are also going to Athens, GA in April for Kirby’s 10th MBA class reunion. It will be nice to go back- we really loved living there! Well, that’s it in a nutshell! Hope everyone out there is doing great!

“Cady-isms”

Cady has really been on a roll this summer adding her own special twist to some common words. Some of the best ones:

Snerkel- “snorkel”
cheederleeder- “cheerleader”
inscusting - “disgusting”
live-es- as in, “the cat has nine live-es”

And then, her comment of last night was great as well! At a restaurant, Cady went to one of the little toy vending machines, put in her money, and a toy came out. When she got it out of the container, she looked up with a very mad face and said, “It’s a hideous monster!”

School Progress

Well, the school now has a roof to go with the slab and the framed walls!! We are well on our way. The finish date is Aug. 25th, so keep your fingers crossed that it will actually work out that way! I uploaded new pics with the roof shown, but for some reason, they ended up on the last page of “family pics”. So, click on that link, then skip to page 8, and they are the last three pictures on the bottom. We will keep updates and photos coming, so keep checking!

He Works Hard for the Money!!

Yesterday, Kevin wanted to earn some extra money, so he asked me if he could give Dixie a bath. I told him I would give him $5 for that job. He eagerly clipped the leash onto her collar, and led her upstairs to the bathroom. I was siiting downstairs listening to the proceedings above. It sounded like we were hosting WWF Raw up there!! All I heard was scuffling and footsteps, and lot of shouts of “Dixie!!” I was laughing so hard, I barely saw the (very wet) dog streak down the stairs. When Kevin came downstairs, his shorts were soaking wet, and he told me that Dixie freaked out and kept getting wrapped up in the shower curtain. This caused me (and Kevin) to laugh some more- and I happily paid him for the chore.

A few minutes later, he asked if he could wash the cat (yikes!) for $5 more. I agreed, but told him he needed to put on a long sleeved shirt and be extremely careful of Sonny’s claws. Off he went, cat in tow, to bathe him in the sink. The cat came flying out after about five minutes- looking very perturbed, and extremely ticked off! But, he was clean!! Kevin did a great job, and earned five more dollars. He didn’t even get scratched! If only I had video-taped both of these baths, we could have had an even better laugh!

Farley Lane, 1995-2007

Farley had to be put to sleep this morning. His cancer had spread to his lungs, and he was no longer making any red blood cells. The vet said it was the best thing for him, as he was obviously in a lot of pain. He will be very missed. Kirby and I got Farley eight days after we got married, so he has been with us for a long time. Please keep Kevin and cady in your prayers, as they are both having a hard time with this- we all are.
